On 18 July 2011, Fundación para Estudio e Investigacion de la Mujer (FEIM); Global Justice Centre; IANSA Women’s Network, International Alliance of Women (IAW); International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA); International Federation of Women in Legal Careers (FIFCJ); and the International Indigenous Women’s Forum (IIWF) submitted a written statement to the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on the occasion of the General Discussion on Women in Conflict and Post-conflict Situations held at the UN in New York.
The statement makes several recommendations to the CEDAW committee, including that it should pay more attention to “the regulation of possession, sale, trade and criminal use of legal and illicit small arms and light weapons… [as] … their proliferation increases the threat of violence against women in the home as well as forced marriage, kidnapping and links to organised crime including human and narcotic trafficking in conflict and postconflict situations”
The purpose of the general discussion was to commence the Committee’s process of elaborating a "General Recommendation on Women in Conflict and Post-conflict Situations".
The purpose of the general recommendation is to provide appropriate and authoritative guidance to States Parties on the measures to be adopted to ensure full compliance with their obligations to protect, respect and fulfil women’s human rights during times of armed conflict and in all peace-building processes, which includes the immediate aftermath of conflict and long-term post-conflict reconstruction.
